The High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, have condemned this Sunday the attack perpetrated on Friday on a nursery in the capital of the Ethiopian region of Tigray.
“(These events) terribly overshadow the commitment made by the Government of Ethiopia to start peace negotiations,” Borrell said on his official Twitter profile, adding that these attacks “are added to the numerous violations of Humanitarian Law in Tigray.”
Michel has spoken in the same terms on his Twitter profile, assuring that “the resumption of fighting puts the lives of millions of people in danger.” “I call on both parties to start negotiations,” she added.
The spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray (TPLF), Getachew Reda, denounced bombings on a nursery in a residential area of the Tigray capital, Mekelle, by the Ethiopian Air Force, an incident that was also confirmed on Twitter. by the TPLF foreign spokesman, Kindeya Gebrehiwot.
The Ethiopian Armed Forces this week resumed military operations in the northern part of the country, where the TPLF denounced the start of a “large-scale offensive”. The Air Force confirmed the shooting down of a plane that had entered from Sudan and was supposedly carrying weapons for the rebel group.
The African Union also follows with “deep concern” the news coming from Ethiopia and through its main official, Musa Faki Mahamat, called, like the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, for an “immediate” ceasefire.
