Uganda has a unique reception policy in the world. The refugees have freedom of movement, they can own arable land and their rights are similar to those of the local population. However, there are many needs faced every day by those who have been fleeing from the horror.
Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting country in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. Seas of Congolese refugees arrive there fleeing the deep violence of the rebels in their country of origin, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
They burn their houses, often made of straw, attack the population with machetes, murder, rape and sow terror in entire communities. For many the only option is to flee.
When they arrive in the neighboring country they find a helping hand. They can work, settle on a plot and build a house. “Everything is fine in Uganda, Ugandans are good people. They are good to us,” says a young migrant, one of the many newcomers to the camps.
However, the challenges and difficulties continue to exist for those who left everything behind.
