UK says Russia launched record number of kamikaze drones against Ukraine in November

He points out that Moscow uses “decoy” drones to “saturate and confuse” the radar systems of the Ukrainian Army

Dec. 23 () –

The United Kingdom Intelligence services have stated this Monday that the Russian Army launched a record number of kamikaze drones against Ukraine during the month of November, in what it describes as “a sustained increase” during 2024, within the framework of the war. unleashed in February 2022.

Thus, they have stated that “Russia launched approximately 2,300 kamikaze drones of different types against Ukraine during November 2024, again exceeding the total of the previous month,” according to a statement published by the British Ministry of Defense through its online account. social

“The monthly numbers of kamikaze drones have increased steadily during 2024, with significant increases, more than 200 compared to the previous month, since July 2024,” they said, before highlighting that between 50 and 60 percent of the launched in November were “decoy” drones.

In this sense, they have explained that “Russian forces have a variety of decoys available” and have added that “they are smaller and cheaper than the ‘Shahed’ type kamikaze drones due to construction materials”, before specifying that “their “The goal is to complicate the Ukrainian defensive effort through saturation and confusion of radar images.”

“Some of the decoy systems probably carry a small explosive charge, up to five kilograms, so they are no less dangerous if they reach their target,” the UK Intelligence services have stated.

Despite this, they have clarified that “the rate of increase between October and November has fallen compared to the previous months” and have asserted that “the launch figures for December show about 850 launches so far”, something they attribute in part to the climate.

“Without an impact on the launch points or their production, it remains likely that Russia can sustain these figures, above 1,500 per month,” they have argued, while emphasizing that these drones “maintain target coverage in the entirety of Ukraine, allowing Russia to maintain pressure while allowing a resupply of long-range missiles.”
