Android Automotive improves with multi-user support and renewed multimedia design

TomTom GO Android Auto

Google has just released a very important update for Android Automotive. Those from Mountain View do not usually release many updates of Android Automotive throughout the year, approximately every three months.

Unlike Android Auto where we receive updates almost every week, in Automative everything is slower.

The Android Automatic 24Q4 update is now available offering a multitude of new features as support for multiple simultaneous users, a multimedia design upgrade and much more.

This latest version of Android Automotive is based on Android 15 and is designed primarily for compatibility with multiple vehicle users.

The notable novelty is called “concurrent multi-user”. It is a way which allows Android Automotive to support two independent users at the same time each with their own personalized experience.

This is an improvement to the multi-display support that was introduced with the update of Android 14 from last year.

That is, with compatibility with several simultaneous users, the screen is allowed to act independently of the system.

In any case, you must be aware This simultaneous multi-user feature is not enabled by default.

Automakers will have to explicitly enable this option before vehicle owners can use it.

This makes sense given that it should be enabled in cars with rear seat screens.

The other novelty that this update includes It is a change in the user interface, specifically in the Media application.

This change updates the user interface of the Media application with both vertical and horizontal orientation.

There are other minor new features such as that you will now be able to activate Bluetooth pairing by holding down the “push to talk” button, something that will make it easier to pair Bluetooth devices.

They comment that cars with mobile or WiFi location will be able to use the time zone geolocation services offered by Google Play Services. This is ideal if you are driving between different time zones and the car clock does not update automatically.
