MADRID Dec. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least ten people died this Saturday, including four children, crushed by a human wave during a food distribution for the needy in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
The incident, confirmed the spokesperson for the city Police, Josephine Adeh, occurred around 06:30 tomorrow, at the Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity, in the Maitama neighborhood.
Eight other people have been injured by the stampede and four of them remain hospitalized, according to the statement collected by the newspaper ‘Nation’.
The first investigations point to a lack of coordination during the distribution work, when thousands of residents rushed to access the food without any control.
To avoid such unfortunate incidents in the future, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered that “all organizations, religious bodies, groups or individuals planning any public event or charitable activity, notify the authorities in advance.” .
“This will allow the deployment of appropriate security measures to guarantee public safety and prevent avoidable tragedies,” such as the one that occurred this Saturday, the note emphasizes.
