UNICEF condemns the attack on a kindergarten in Ethiopia and calls for an “immediate” ceasefire

UNICEF warns that the "devastating" child crisis in Sri Lanka may be a prolegomenon for South Asia

Aug. 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has “strongly” condemned the attack perpetrated on Friday on a nursery in the capital of the Ethiopian region of Tigray and has called on all parties for an “immediate cessation of hostilities”.

The director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, has lamented the death of “several children” in this attack – at least two, according to medical sources cited by the Bloomberg agency -. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray (TFLP) has blamed the central government of Ethiopia for the bombing.

Russell lamented in a statement that children have returned to “pay the highest price” in the face of a new escalation of violence in the north of the African country. “For two years, children and families in the region have endured the agony of this conflict. This has to end,” she said.

The TPLF and the government of Abiy Ahmed have resumed their clashes this week, which has meant the end of a fragile ceasefire with which the parties aspired to end the war that began in November 2020.
