MADRID Dec. 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United Nations General Assembly approved this Thursday a resolution that asks the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for an advisory opinion on Israel’s duty to guarantee humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and to collaborate with UN agencies. in this purpose.

Specifically, 137 countries have voted in favor of the text, while 12 have voted against – the United States, Israel, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Fiji, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Paraguay and Hungary – while 22 member states have abstained.

“Today the international community has said enough. We have an obligation to respond. Israel argues that it has the right to do what it is doing. We now ask for a directive from the world’s highest court on this argument,” said the Norwegian Secretary of State, Andreas Kravik, speaking to the press.

Likewise, he has highlighted that Israel, under International Law, has the obligation to “provide assistance”, to “collaborate” with the United Nations, as well as other humanitarian organizations, in the delivery of aid to the Palestinian enclave.

In response, Israel’s representative to the UN, Danny Danon, has indicated in a message on the social network United Nations for Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) instead of “taking advantage” to “free the world from the murderous Iranian regime.”

The number of deaths due to the offensive launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip has increased to more than 45,100, as reported this Thursday by the authorities of the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

Israel launched its offensive against Gaza after the attacks on October 7, 2023 by Palestinian militias, which left nearly 1,200 dead and about 250 kidnapped. Additionally, more than 800 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and in settler attacks since then in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
