MADRID Dec. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed this Tuesday an Air Force attack against an area in southern Lebanon where the presence of an alleged member of the Shiite militia party Hezbollah who was loading weapons in a vehicle had been detected.
“An Air Force plane attacked the vehicle to eliminate the threat,” the Israeli Army reported on its social networks, where it stressed that it remains “committed” to the ceasefire agreement reached with Hezbollah at the end of November. .
Despite the pact, Israeli troops remain deployed in the southern area of Lebanon to act precisely in the face of possible scenarios like this and “eliminate any threat to the State of Israel and its citizens”, as the IDF has highlighted.
Israel and Hezbollah agreed several weeks ago on a ceasefire pact for the cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of both from southern Lebanon, where the regular Lebanese Army must take positions to guarantee the security of the Israeli State. However, both sides have accused each other of reneging on the agreement.
Hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel intensified after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 – which left almost 1,200 dead and 240 hostages – and the subsequent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, which this Monday has already surpassed. 45,000 dead and around 107,000 injured.
The toll of victims from the conflict in Lebanon is notably lower, as the Lebanese authorities have reported nearly 4,000 deaths. In both conflicts, Israel has managed to eliminate a large part of the political and military leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah, such as the Palestinians Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniye, or the Lebanese Hasan Nasrallah.
