The EU classifies the 'road map' for Libya proposed by the UN as "positive"

BRUSSELS Dec. 16 () –

The European Union has classified as “positive” the ‘road map’ proposed by the acting head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Koury, before the UN Security Council to put an end to the political crisis in the country.

“We strongly encourage all Libyan and international stakeholders to engage in a meaningful, responsible and constructive manner with the United Nations and its representative in Libya,” EU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Anouar el Anouni stressed in a statement.

In this sense, he has stressed that the “collective commitment” to the proposed new mechanism – in which a diversity of political, social, cultural and geographical forces in the country will participate – is “essential” in order to guarantee its success.

“The European Union renews its strong support for the central role of UNSMIL and its work towards a political solution based on an inclusive inter-Libyan dialogue aimed at renewing the legitimacy of Libyan institutions through elections,” it concluded.

Libya is divided into two administrations after the Libyan House of Representatives terminated the mandate of Abdul Hamid Dbeibé due to the postponement of the presidential elections in December 2021 and appointed Fazi Bashaga to the position, later suspended from office and replaced by Osama Hamad. Dbeibé rejected the decision, opting to remain in office until elections were held.
