More than twenty workers rescued after a mine collapse in northern Afghanistan

MADRID Dec. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Afghan authorities reported this Sunday the rescue of more than twenty workers who had been trapped for more than 24 hours under the rubble of a mine that had collapsed in the province of Samangan, in the north of the country.

“Fortunately, 22 people who had been trapped under the rubble after the collapse of the coal mine in the Darah Sof Payin district of Samangan province were rescued alive by local authorities and rescue teams,” announced the spokesperson for the Samagn governorate, Asmatulá Moradi, in statements reported by the Afghan network Tolo News.

The state-run Bakhtar news agency has claimed that “all” of the miners have been rescued, although it had previously estimated 35 trapped workers. The collapse took place this Saturday around 6:00 p.m. (local time), after the collapse of a mine in the Sefid Khak area, in the Darah Sof Payin district.

The majority of mining activity in the country is carried out using traditional methods, without adequate safety measures or equipment, posing a significant risk to the lives of workers.
