Special envoy Geir Pedersen leaves the decision in the hands of the US and the EU as responsible for them
Dec. 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has advocated for a quick end to the sanctions currently weighing on the country – once issued against the regime of already deposed former president Bashar al Assad – to facilitate the political transition. and the solution to the enormous challenges facing the country.
The Al Assad regime ended last Sunday with the seizure of the capital, Damascus, by an opposition alliance led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, which has promised to begin a transition process towards a civilian government with the collaboration international.
“We have to do things right from the beginning,” declared Pedersen, visiting Damascus at a time of “great hopes and many challenges ahead” for the country.
The special envoy has considered as a priority the beginning of an inclusive political process “led by the Syrians themselves” to, from there, guarantee the functioning of “state institutions functions, the provision of services, public order and security.
Pedersen has also urged the immediate arrival of aid to alleviate the “enormous humanitarian crisis that the country is going through” and “quick” solutions to facilitate economic recovery.
“We have to make sure that this aspect is resolved quickly. Let’s hope that the sanctions end soon, so that we can really see a mobilization around the reconstruction of Syria,” the envoy said.
Pedersen, in this regard, recalled that the decision is in the hands of the United States and the European Union, as responsible for imposing sanctions that have nothing to do with the United Nations.
