Gustavo Petro travels to Ecuador to strengthen ties for climate action

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, traveled this Saturday to the Galapagos Islands at the invitation of his Ecuadorian counterpart, Daniel Noboa, to “strengthen ties for climate action” between both countries.

Petro, who will be accompanied on this visit by the director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency of the Republic (Dapre), Laura Sarabia, will be received upon arrival at the Galapagos Ecological Airporton Baltra Island, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, María Gabriela Sommerfeld.

The visit will extend until tomorrow, Sunday, the Presidency added in a statement. Petro and Noboa will tour the Galapagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station, key spaces for environmental conservation, as well as different islands of the archipelago, guided by experts from the Galapagos National Park.

“This exchange will allow us to identify opportunities for cooperation in environmental projects and share successful experiences in biodiversity conservation,” noted the presidency.

This visit is made in reference to the strategies that Ecuador has implemented to preserve the unique ecosystems and endemic species of the archipelago, recognized as Natural Heritage of Humanity.

The arrival time of Petro is unknown, who participated this morning in an event to award former judges of the Supreme Court of Justice with the Order of Boyacá. The agenda will also include bilateral meetings focused on the sustainable management of natural resources and the strengthening of joint actions against climate change.

“President Petro’s visit to the Galapagos Islands represents a mutual commitment between Colombia and Ecuador to lead environmental protection in the region and advance towards a common agenda of sustainability, cooperation and solidarity”
concluded the office of the Colombian head of state.

Petro and Noboa maintain a good relationship and met within the framework of the Biodiversity COP16 held last October in the Colombian city of Cali, where they talked about energy cooperation and scheduled this visit to the Galapagos Islands.
