MADRID Dec. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nayib Mikati, expressed this Saturday his willingness to achieve bilateral relations with Syria based on “mutual respect” between the parties and the “interest of their respective peoples.”
This was stated during a meeting with the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmud Abbas, and several ambassadors, in Rome, Italy, where he is visiting and has stressed the importance of “respecting the will of the Syrian population” now that Bashar al Assad’s regime has fallen after the lightning offensive carried out by rebel and jihadist forces.
“We must respect their wish, and we wish them the best in this regard,” he stated after addressing the Syrian issue with Abbas, according to information collected by the Lebanese news agency NNA.
Likewise, he has stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire reached by Israel and the Hezbollah militia party and has expressed his hope that Lebanon will finally be able to appoint a president as soon as possible in order to form a new government.
“We are doing everything possible to manage the affairs of state as best as possible and cooperate with all international institutions, but a new president is needed to complete this work,” he said.
