China shows its concern about the situation in Syria but defends "the people's choice"

MADRID Dec. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of China has shown this Friday its concern about the latest events in Syria, although it has said it respects and defends “the people’s choice”, while calling for the restoration of peace.

The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has indicated after meeting in Beijing with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelati, that both are “concerned” by the latest events after the fall of the Syrian president, Bashar al Assad, after the lightning offensive led by rebel and jihadist groups.

“We call for the sovereignty of the country to be respected,” he said during a press conference in which he urged to prevent “terrorist and extremist forces from taking advantage of the chaos” that prevails in the territory.

“The situation in Syria has worsened drastically. China has followed this closely, but it has never intervened in the country’s internal affairs and respects the decision of its people,” he stated before emphasizing the importance of achieving stability as soon as possible. In this sense, he has highlighted the need to achieve a national restructuring plan that “responds to the will” of the population.

Likewise, it has urged to “suspend the illegitimate unilateral sanctions” imposed for years against Damascus, as stated by the Ministry in a statement.
