The Jordanian Foreign Ministry has announced that it will host a summit on Saturday on the situation in Syria to which regional and international leaders are invited, including the top diplomat of the European Union, Kaja Kallas.

The summit will be attended by the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar, as well as their Turkish and American counterparts; the secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the UN envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement that regional and international leaders will discuss “ways to support an inclusive political process led by Syria” under resolution 2254 of the United Nations Security Council.

The new interim authorities established in Syria after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime have thanked several countries for reopening their embassies in Damascus and have expressed their desire to maintain “good relations” with “all countries that respect the popular will.” in Syria.

The offensive in Syria, launched on November 27 from the province of Idlib, allowed jihadists and rebels to take the capital and put an end to the regime of the Al Assad family, in power since 1971 – first with Hafez al Assad (1971-2000). ) and later with his son, Bashar–, in the face of a constant withdrawal of government troops, backed by Russia and Iran.
