Trump once again raises the possibility of the US leaving NATO if member countries “don’t pay their bills”

The elected president of the United States, donald trumphe pointed out this Sunday in an interview with NBC that he would consider the possibility of the United States leaving NATO if member countries “don’t pay their bills.”

“If they are paying their bills, and if I believe they are treating us fairly, the answer is: absolutely, I would stay with NATO,” he said in his first television interview after his victory in the November 5 elections, but specified who would otherwise consider withdrawing his country from the alliance.

Trump noted on the program ‘Meet the Press’which was pre-recorded and broadcast this Sunday, which NATO “takes advantage” of the United Statesa message that he reiterated on several occasions already in his first term (2017-2021), a period in which he had a tense relationship with the organization.

The Republican stated that NATO “takes advantage” of the US in contributions to the Alliance, despite the fact that his country is the one that defends it, while Europe does not give it fair trade treatment, in his opinion.

“I got hundreds of billions of dollars into NATO simply by being tough. I told the countries: ‘I’m not going to protect you unless you pay’ and they started paying. And that amounted to more than 600,000 million dollars,” added the magnate, referring to his first term.

NATO, created after World War II and during the Cold War, committed in 2014 to having its members spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, something Trump has pushed to achieve, although he has also considered that the ideal percentage should be 4%.

Trump also noted in the same interview that he wants the “dreamers,” beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to the United States, they can stay in the country.

The tycoon pointed out that his “plan” is work with democrats to make this possible. “Some of them are not young anymore. And in many cases, they have been successful. They have good jobs. In some cases they have small businesses. In other cases, they may have large companies. And we are going to have to do something with them,” he said the Republican on NGC’s ‘Meet the Press’ program.

However, Trump also confirmed that he plans deport minor US citizens who have undocumented parents. “I don’t want to separate families and the only way not to separate them is to send them all back together, even the children who are here legally,” the president said.
