Retired Civil Guard colonel Francisco García Santaella entered the security module of the Estremera prison in Madrid on December 3 to serve a sentence of seven years and two months for drug trafficking and bribery. End of journey for a case that started in 2014, when an Anti-Drug civil guard, between hours and hours of tapping phones, noticed the allusion that some drug traffickers made to a certain “Father.” In April 2015, elDiario.es revealed that a judge in Granada was secretly investigating Colonel Santaella. Hours later, Santaella was dismissed from the position he held in the General Directorate of the Civil Guard.
The colonel’s fate was definitively cast since last September the Supreme Court rejected the colonel’s last appeal against his conviction by the Granada Court. Admission to the Santaella prison is the paradigm of the difficulties for a uniformed officer, even more so if he holds a high rank and is decorated, to pay for the crimes committed, which are more than proven in his case.
