Lula is recovering in the ICU after surgery to drain brain hemorrhage, hospital reports

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in an intensive care unit after undergoing surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage, the Syrian-Lebanese hospital said in a statement early Tuesday.

The procedure was performed after the 79-year-old leftist leader experienced headaches that doctors believed were the result of a fall at his home in October.

The hospital said Lula, who traveled from the capital Brasilia to be treated 1,000 kilometers south (620 miles) in Sao Paulo, is “well, under monitoring in an ICU bed” after the bleeding was drained.

The Brazilian presidency has not yet issued any comments.

Lula canceled a trip to Russia for a BRICS summit after the crash, his office said at the time. The fall left a visible cut on the back of his head, slightly above his neck.

The Syrian-Lebanese hospital announced that a press conference would be held at 9 a.m. to discuss the surgery.
