Chronicle of a death foretold. Spotify’s Car Things They are, or were, small devices with a screen that allowed the online music playback service to be used in vehicles that did not have intelligent entertainment systems.
Launched 3 years ago, the company decided in May of this year that it was not going to continue supporting it and that the devices that still worked would only do so until December 9. Today we are December 10 and it’s official: All Spotify Car Things have become expensive paperweights.
Unlike other companies that, although they cancel support and sales when they discontinue a product, Spotify has decided to restrict access to its service to the owners of these devices, so, unless some enthusiastic user or hacker decides to unravel the guts of this device to give it another life, they will no longer be of any use.
At least the company seems to indicate on the screen of dead devices, which will offer some refund option if requested before the end of January.
The company does not seem to have plans to release them and let users give them another use, in fact, Spotify itself assures that they are not working on giving it more support or launching another version of the device, making it official that the Car Thing have turned out to be a failure, and revealing once again the dangers of devices that depend exclusively on the support of a company to function correctly.
