The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, called this Tuesday for an “inclusive and peaceful” transition in Syria after the dazzling offensive launched at the end of November by rebel and jihadist groups that overthrew the regime of Bashar al Assad.

After a conversation with King Abdullah of Jordan in which both discussed the situation in neighboring Syria, Rutte indicated in a message on social networks that they both discussed “the hope for an inclusive and peaceful transition.”

The conversation with the king of Jordan comes after Abdullah participated for the first time in a NATO ministerial meeting last week, on an occasion in which the 32 allies confirmed their willingness to be more present in the Middle East region.

In any case, Rutte has also warned that the threat from the Islamic State and other terrorist groups weighs on the situation in Syria, in an alert in line with the United States that has warned that the group can be strengthened in the face of the situation of uncertainty after the collapse of the Al Assad regime.

In a statement this Monday, the former Dutch Prime Minister celebrated the departure of Al Assad from power in Syria while recognizing that it is a moment of “uncertainty both for the Syrian population and for an entire region marked in this last year by instability.

The political head of NATO blamed Russia and Iran for their responsibility as close allies of Al Assad in the crimes committed by the Syrian dictatorship, while pointing out that they abandoned him “when he stopped being useful.”

In any case, the military organization has not alluded at the moment to any specific group in the amalgamation of opposition forces or to the role that the jihadists of Hayat Tharir al Sham (HTS) may play, pointing out that it will “closely” monitor the post-Assad moment. , to see “how the rebels carry out this transition.”
