BRUSSELS Dec. 10 () –

The European Union indicated this Wednesday that the bloc’s member states will assess “the actions and not just the words” of the transitional authorities in Syria before proceeding with recognition, after the appointment of Mohamed al Bashir as the person in charge of forming a government.

In statements from Brussels, the EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Anouar el Anouni, has reiterated that the bloc does not maintain any contact or conversation with the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), which has led the fall of the Bashar regime. al Assad in Syria, and that any decision to recognize the Syrian authorities will fall to the 27 after analyzing the first steps taken by the rebels.

Faced with the rapid evolution of events after the overthrow of Al Assad, the EU will evaluate “the actions and not just the words of those who exercise responsibility” in Syria, the spokesperson has deepened, after pointing out that “later” the 27 will take decisions about contacts with the actors piloting the transition.

The designation by the coalition of jihadist and rebel groups of Al Bashir, until now at the head of the Salvation Government appointed by HTS in areas under its control in Idlib, will be one of the issues that the 27 will address at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Affairs next Monday, he explained.

“The next steps of the EU will be decided by the Member States and also within the framework of the United Nations since HTS is currently under United Nations sanctions,” argued El Anouni, while recalling that removing this group from the list of terrorist organizations in the EU requires a unanimous decision from the community club.

The coalition of jihadists and rebels has given Al Bashir the power to form a new government “to manage the transition phase” after talks with the outgoing prime minister, Mohamed al Jalali, in order to materialize “a transfer of power ” that “prevents Syria from entering a state of chaos.”

The fall of the Syrian regime has taken place as a result of the lightning offensive by forces opposing Al Assad, which caused a continued withdrawal of government troops, supported by Russia and Iran, until the flight on Sunday of the country’s long-time president. 24 years of the capital facing the collapse of its forces.
