MADRID Dec. 9 () –
The authorities of the republic of Abkhazia, ‘de facto’ independent of Georgia with the support of Russia, have announced this Monday a strict schedule of power cuts of up to ten hours a day, as well as the suspension of Internet services due to the delicate situation that the region’s energy system is going through.
“Due to the difficult situation of the energy supply of the republic, starting December 9, 2024, a new electricity supply schedule will be implemented. From 9:00 p.m. (local time) to 7:00 a.m. the electricity supply will be free,” he said. The public company Chernomorenergo detailed in a statement collected by the APSNYPRESS news agency.
The situation of shortages, related to the dependence on the Russian market and also due to the low water level in the country’s main hydroelectric plant, has also caused the Government to order the interruption of the Internet throughout the territory during the early hours of Tuesday.
This decision would be aimed at addressing cryptocurrency mining, which consumes an average of 350 million kilowatts per hour annually, which would translate into “more of the deficit” in electricity that the republic of Abkhazia now suffers, according to explained the general director of Chernomorenergo, Timur Dzhindzholia.
Likewise, the Executive decided this Monday to suspend classes in schools in Abkhazia for a week starting Wednesday. These measures aim to guarantee the energy supply in key infrastructures, such as the health system, which is not being affected at the moment.
