MADRID Dec. 9 () –
The Syrian Embassy in Moscow has been operating since Monday under “a new flag” after the fall of the Bashar al Assad regime, who took refuge precisely in Russia after the dazzling rebel and jihadist offensive that concluded with the taking of the capital, Damascus.
On Sunday, the Embassy had already removed the national flag associated with the Al Assad dynasty and which had represented the country since 1963, coinciding with the arrival to power of the Baath party. This Monday, a previous flag is already flying, now a symbol of the insurgency.
A spokesperson for the legation explained to the Russian news agency TASS that “the Embassy has opened and is operating as usual under a new flag.” These changes were also visible in other capitals, including Madrid, which on Sunday hosted a rally of critics of the deposed Syrian regime.
In the case of Russia, it so happens that it is the country to which Al Assad has fled with his family. Russian authorities have confirmed that the deposed president, who has not appeared publicly since his flight, has requested asylum.
