Russia calls for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Syria

MADRID Dec. 9 () –

Russian authorities have called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the situation in Syria after the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime following an offensive lasting less than two weeks by a collective of rebel groups and the jihadist organization Hayat Tahrir. al Sham (HTS).

“In light of the latest events in Syria, the depth and consequences of which for this country and the entire region have not yet been determined, Russia has requested urgent consultations behind closed doors of the UN Security Council,” announced Russia’s deputy representative to United Nations, Dmitri Polianski, on his Telegram channel.

The diplomat, who stressed that “it is important to understand the new circumstances surrounding the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force, also known as UNDOF, an international peacekeeping mission deployed in the Syrian Golan Heights since 1974, has indicated that he hopes the meeting will take place this Monday afternoon.

The Kremlin has been one of the main international supporters of Syrian President Bashar al Assad and its military intervention in 2015 allowed government forces to repel rebel advances and stabilize the fronts.
