The Israeli Prime Minister argues that the decision has been made to protect the Israeli population after the fall of Al Assad
Dec. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the historic Disengagement Agreement signed with Syria in 1974 has “collapsed” and has ordered the entry of troops into the so-called “buffer zone” in the Golan Heights.
This agreement was part of the political processes opened after the end of the Arab-Israeli war of 1973 (the Yom Kippur War, as it is known in Israel) and stipulates the creation of a demilitarized zone that, until now, has been under control of the so-called United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
The Israeli Prime Minister made this announcement during a visit to the Golan Heights occupied by Israel within the framework of the historic fall of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, which culminated this morning with the taking of the country’s capital, Damascus, by an alliance of rebel groups with the jihadist organization Hayat Tahrir Al Sham.
Hours before these groups entered the capital, Israel reported attacks against UN force positions in this demilitarized zone and decided to intervene to repel the aggressor armed groups, which it did not fully identify.
Now, and “to protect Israel’s border above all else,” Netanyahu has ordered a deployment of Israeli forces in this demilitarized zone for an indefinite period, according to statements reported by Israeli media.
“This area has been controlled for almost 50 years by a buffer zone agreed upon in 1974, the Separation of Forces Agreement. This agreement has collapsed and Syrian soldiers have abandoned their positions,” said the prime minister.
Therefore, “the Israel Defense Forces have been deployed in the ‘buffer zone’ and in a series of areas that need to be defended, in order to guarantee the security of the communities of the Golan Heights and the citizens of Israel,” the Army added in an additional statement.
“We emphasize that the IDF does not intervene in the events taking place in Syria, but will continue to operate as long as necessary to preserve the buffer zone and protect the State of Israel and its citizens,” the Army concludes in its message, published on its account. from social network X.
