Throughout more than 30 years, kirby has earned a privileged place in the industry. One of the characteristics that identifies him among many franchises and characters is that he bases the game mechanics of his titles on his ability to swallow and copy enemies by inhaling them, which is somehow linked to his charm. However, we have just discovered that this could be very different.

Masahiro Sakurai took his followers by surprise this week by announcing that he would become a youtuber with the intention of sharing tips that could help developers create more fun games. As part of this project, the creative would also take advantage of the game concepts category to share design details of the projects he has directed.

Kirby’s swallowing ability was going to be different.

To open this section, Sakurai spoke of Kirby’s Dreamlandthe first game for which he is credited as director and which he proposed when he was just 19 years old.

In the video, the developer talked about several details that he took into account when creating Kirby’s first adventure and the most interesting thing is that he revealed that he originally planned for Kirby to use his tongue to catch enemies from a distance, just like Yoshi from Super Mario. It is important to note that Sakurai imagined this before Yoshi existed (the dinosaur debuted in Super Mario World, in 1990; Kirby did it in 1992, but clearly when Sakurai started designing Kirby he didn’t know about Yoshi).

However, for a reason he sadly didn’t share, Sakurai ultimately decided to have Kirby take them into his mouth only by inhaling them and then spitting them back out or swallowing them whole.

Unfortunately, the creative also did not share any official image of Kirby using the tongue and it is unknown if they came into existence, so it will be the fans’ job to imagine it that way.

Curiously, although the concept of Kirby using his tongue was discarded, it is possible to see the character do so later, precisely in the series. Super Smash Bros.in which Kirby can ingest Yoshi and copy his move, bringing objects and opponents into his mouth using his tongue.

Sakurai wanted the first game of kirby it was simple

Another interesting detail is that Sakurai talked about the difficulty and accessibility of Kirby’s Dreamland. According to the Japanese genius, he gave Kirby the ability to float because he considered it too cruel that he would only lose a life by missing a jump, as in Castlevaniathat for such an error the player lost the entire life bar.

“This would seem like it took all the fun out of the game, but I wanted to make the first game of kirby be as accessible as possible for new players,” said Sakurai, who confessed that during development he was asked if he was sure about this decision, to which the creative firmly replied yes.

Sakurai reflects that making the title a welcome point for new players who weren’t familiar with this pastime at the time was a wise move and backed up his argument by recalling that it is the best-selling title in the franchise, even though it debuted at one point. in which action games were very difficult.

In case you missed it: the anime of kirby will return in all its splendor thanks to a remastering.
