Trump attributes the flight of Syrian President Bashar al Assad to the "weakness" of Russia and Iran

MADRID Dec. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, attributed this Sunday the flight of the president of Syria, Bashar al Assad, to the “weakness” of Russia and Iran after the rebel forces led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham ( HTS) and its allied factions have taken the capital, Damascus.

“Russia and Iran are weakened right now, one because of Ukraine and a bad economy; the other because of Israel and its success in combat,” Trump said in a message posted on the Truth Social social network.

The magnate has said that Assad has fled after Russia, a country he has described as the regime’s “protector”, has lost interest in protecting him. “They lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine, where nearly 600,000 Russian soldiers have been wounded or killed,” he said.

In this sense, he has urged that the parties resume negotiations to achieve an “immediate ceasefire” in Ukraine. “Too many lives are being wasted unnecessarily, too many families are being destroyed,” he said, urging China to contribute to the peace process.
