For their part, different civic and union groups plan to carry out candlelight demonstrations or protests throughout the country in the coming days to demand the president’s resignation, also due to his controversial declaration of martial law on the night of Tuesday.
In the southwestern city of Gwangju, about 1,000 citizens are expected to attend a candlelight demonstration against Yoon, its organizers announced, adding that similar rallies will also be held in Suncheon, Yeosu and other cities in South Jeolla province.
In the southeastern cities of Daegu and Pohang, civic and union activists held news conferences Wednesday morning to demand the president’s resignation and said they planned to hold similar demonstrations in the afternoon. Furthermore, they denounced the president’s declaration of martial law as a rebellion, which involves the military and the police.
In Busan, civic activists plan to hold demonstrations every day starting this Wednesday afternoon and until early next week in protest of Yoon’s actions. Similar protests are planned to take place in the nearby city of Ulsan. Various candlelight demonstrations will be held in the city of Chuncheon in Gangwon Province and on Jeju Island in the south of the country at 7:00 p.m.
Demonstrations calling for Yoon’s ouster were already held on Wednesday morning in Daejeon, Sejong and other regions of South Chungcheong Province, as well as candlelight vigils demanding his resignation in several places, including the city of Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, and Changwon City, South Gyeongsang Province.
In the Seoul metropolitan area, which includes the surrounding province of Gyeonggi and the city of Incheon, several groups issued statements, including local bar associations.
Additionally, members of civil society and union groups in the metropolitan area plan to participate in the demonstrations held in Seoulin Gwanghwamun Square.
