The president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, has warned that “every minute” that Russian troops spend in the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant increases the risk of “a global radioactive disaster”, for which he has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other organizations to move “much faster” to protect these facilities.
Zelensky, in his evening speech, recalled that the plant was disconnected this Thursday from the Ukrainian power grid “for the first time in history”, after an escalation of tensions in the area for which both parties have blamed each other.
The emergency protocols worked, but Zelenski has recalled that if the alternative generators had not been activated, there would have been a radioactive leak. “Russia has put Ukraine and all Europeans in a situation where we are one step away from disaster,” he said.
The Ukrainian president has indicated that, on the part of kyiv, “everything possible” is being done to prevent “an emergency scenario”, but has admitted that it may not be enough: “It does not only depend on our country”.
In this sense, he has pointed to the Russian “occupants” but also to the international community, which he has demanded to speed up its efforts to guarantee security. The IAEA has repeatedly demanded access to the plant and, according to Zelenski, this mission should be “immediate”.
“It can be done in a matter of days, before the occupiers take the situation to an irreversible point. And it is easier to do it now than later, when the wind begins to spread the radiation throughout Europe,” he has sentenced.
