The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has stressed that the creation of a Palestinian State is “absolutely necessary” to obtain peace in the Middle East and has confirmed that next June France will co-chair, together with Saudi Arabia, an international conference on this issue. although he has once again ruled out any immediate gesture of recognition.
“The recognition of the State of Palestine should help accelerate the two-state solution,” said Macron, in an interview with the newspaper ‘An Nahar’ in which he stressed that, although “France is ready” to take the step , it’s still not the time.
Paris has always stated that it will do so when it contributes to a broader solution to the conflict, which according to Macron is not incompatible with initiatives such as promoting Palestine’s entry into the UN as a full member state. “It is essential that recognition be made within a lasting solution to the crisis,” he said during his official trip to Saudi Arabia.
The French president and the Saudi crown prince, Mohamed Bin Salmán, have agreed to hold an international summit in June 2025 to promote the two-state solution. The UN General Assembly has also adopted a resolution calling for a high-level conference on those dates.
Macron has insisted on “preserving” the option that there could be a Palestinian State in view of the “acceleration” of Israeli colonization in the West Bank, the “annexationist discourses” that emerged at the dawn of the escalation of the conflict in this last year and the measures taken against organizations such as UNRWA.
“It is absolutely essential to offer Palestinians real hope for a better life in an independent state and also leave Hamas without any basis for legitimacy,” he stressed.
Macron has also defended the need to dialogue with the Israeli authorities, a key condition to resolve the crises in the region, and regarding the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, he has limited to saying that “France will respect its obligations under International Law.”
“The judiciary is totally independent,” he alleged, days after the Government affirmed that Netanyahu enjoys immunity that theoretically would protect him from that hypothetical arrest.
