BRUSSELS Dec. 3 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, pointed out this Tuesday before the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Kosovo prime minister, Albin Kurti, that the normalization of relations is “the only way” to membership to the European Union.
In his first meeting with the leaders of Serbia and Kosovo after taking office this Sunday, Kallas has reiterated in separate meetings with Vucic and Kurti the need to take steps in the normalization of relations based on the Ohrid agreement, signed in 2023 to implement the specific agreements and commitments acquired by the parties to have good neighborly relations.
“The only path to accession to the EU is through the normalization of its relations, on the basis of the Ohrid agreement,” the former Estonian prime minister said in a message on social media.
In this sense, Kallas has highlighted the willingness of Belgrade and Pristina to “cooperate fully” after the “terrorist attack” registered last Friday against an aqueduct that supplies water to Kosovo and which has reignited tensions in the region.
“The perpetrators must face justice,” he reiterated, regarding the episode in which an armed group detonated explosives in the Zubin Potok canal.
The EU has been acting as a mediator between Belgrade and Pristina for more than a decade to try to normalize their relations, broken since the independence declared by Kosovo unilaterally in 2008 and recognized by the United States and the majority of EU member states.
In any case, the dialogue has achieved very limited progress on the part of both Kosovo and Serbia due to the lack of implementation of the obligations they accepted in different agreements.
