MADRID Dec. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The main South Korean opposition party, the Democratic Party, has threatened to initiate a process to remove the country’s president, Yoon Suk Yeol, if he does not resign after being forced to lift in a matter of hours the controversial martial law that he decreed with the goal of “eradicating pro-North Korean forces.”
“Yoon’s declaration of martial law is a clear violation of the Constitution. It is a serious act of rebellion and a perfect reason for impeachment,” reads a resolution issued by the formation and reported by the state news agency. Yonhap.
The statement, which comes after an emergency meeting of Democratic Party deputies, emphasizes that the South Korean leader “did not meet any of the requirements” stipulated by the Constitution to declare martial law.
For their part, a group of more than 40 opposition deputies have defended an impeachment against Yoon for being “the intellectual author of a treasonous act of state mismanagement,” the newspaper ‘The Korea Herald’ reported.
“The president committed an act equivalent to treason by mobilizing the Army. It is clear that he cannot remain in office even a moment longer. Therefore, we must urgently approve a motion of censure,” said the leader of the Party of the Reconstruction of Korea, Hwang Un-ha.
“The National Assembly should focus on passing the motion as quickly as possible to immediately suspend the president’s functions,” he declared.
This comes after deputies voted against martial law in an extraordinary session held amid scenes of chaos both inside and outside the headquarters of South Korea’s main legislative body, shortly after the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Park An Soo, considered any type of political activity cancelled.
Yoon has announced martial law in an unexpected speech to the nation in which he has accused the opposition of sympathizing with the North Korean regime after the opposition passed a budget measure in Parliament and presented impeachment motions against several senior officials.
