BRUSSELS Dec. 3 () –
The European Union indicated this Tuesday that it “closely follows” the evolution of events in South Korea after the South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, declared martial law to “eradicate forces related to North Korea”, a decision that Parliament asked to reverse hours later.
“President Yoon declares martial law in South Korea. We are closely monitoring the development of the situation,” said the EU ambassador in Seoul, María Castillo, in a message on social networks, being the first reaction from the European side. in light of the latest events in the Asian country.
Yoon announced martial law this Tuesday in an unexpected speech to the nation in which he accused the opposition of sympathizing with the North Korean regime, after the opposition passed a budget measure in Parliament and presented motions of dismissal of several senior officials.
Shortly after, South Korea’s National Assembly, controlled by the opposition, voted on a motion to ask the president to repeal martial law, a legislative step that in theory should mean the end of exceptional measures.
