US Great Lakes region recovers after snowfalls, but more are on the way

Even more snow could fall in the United States’ Great Lakes region, which has been blanketed in white after days of storms that caused fatal accidents, the collapse of a barn on top of 100 cows and accumulations of up to 1.83 meters of snow .

While cleanup efforts continued Tuesday in parts of Western New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, areas in New York were still experiencing snowfall and a lake effect snow warning remained in effect as of Tuesday evening.

Some places could receive another 10 to 20 centimeters of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Layers of snow accumulating on a high school in Ohio caused a partial roof collapse over the weekend. School officials near Ashtabula found more damage Monday, and said it would take weeks to repair and that they were making plans to move classes elsewhere.

More than 5 feet of snow covered the area east of Cleveland along Lake Erie and more snow was expected later in the week with a winter storm watch in place Wednesday night through Friday.

Crews were making good progress keeping roads open, officials said, and most travel restrictions had ended by Tuesday morning.

Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard were using Humvees and tactical vehicles to transport health care workers and those in need of medical care while also rescuing stranded drivers over the past four days, according to a spokesman, Maj. Travis Mueller.

Heavy snowfall in recent days caused several fatal accidents. Three people died Monday morning in a crash in Iowa after a driver tried to pass a snow plow and hit another vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

In western Kentucky, two people were killed in a crash Monday night that blocked Interstate 24 for hours.
