MADRID Dec. 2 () –
The president of Iceland, Halla Tomasdottir, met this Monday with the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Kristrun Frostadottir, so that, once she has won the parliamentary elections on Saturday, she can begin the process for the formation of a new coalition government .
It is expected that the president will hold talks with the leaders of the rest of the formations and that, towards the end of the day or even on Tuesday, the person in charge of the mission of forming a new government alliance will be officially announced, although Frostadottir is part as main favorite.
Frostadottir achieved victory in the early elections, amid voter discontent over the high cost of living and housing shortages. It is expected that he will be able to form a coalition with the Liberal Reformist Party, which in the campaign has moved in terms similar to those of the social democrats.
Led by the deputy and former Minister of Education, Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir, the Liberal Reform Party came in third place in the elections, only behind the Social Democrats and the Independence Party of current Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson.
The Social Democrats and the Liberal Reform Party also agree on closer cooperation with the European Union and promise to impose a resource tax on the fishing and energy sectors. The duo would have 26 of the 63 seats in Parliament, so they would need a third party for the majority.
