The Prime Minister of Senegal announces that he will continue in office and resigns from his deputy status after the legislative elections

MADRID Dec. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, announced this Monday that he will continue in office instead of becoming president of the National Assembly, a position that would correspond to him after the victory of his party, African Patriots of Senegal for Labor, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF), in the early legislative elections held in November.

Sonko has revealed that he is renouncing his deputy title, obtained as head of the PASTEF list in the elections, before emphasizing that he “wishes a good mandate” to the parliamentarians, statements made a few hours before the inauguration of the new mandate of the National Assembly.

“I have come to the National Assembly to present my letter of resignation. The President of the Republic needs me at his side,” he stated, referring to the current president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, his main ally, as reported by the Senegalese state agency. news, APS.

The announcement comes just a few days after the Constitutional Council ratified PASTEF’s victory in the elections, in which it won the absolute majority by winning 130 of the 165 seats. Behind them were the Takku Wallu Senegal coalition – headed by former president Macky Sall – with 16; and Diam Ak Njarin, with seven, among other parties that achieved representation.

Sonko himself said last week that these results represent “a renewed mandate” to the “systemic transformation project” launched by Faye after her victory in the March presidential elections. The president prevailed over Sall after presenting himself as an opposition candidate following the exclusion of the now prime minister due to a previous conviction against him, which he attributed to persecution by the authorities to remove him from politics.

After winning the presidential election, Faye appointed Sonko as prime minister with the aim of promoting their joint agenda, although the Government has since denounced that Sall’s allies were blocking the reforms and proposals put before Parliament, thus causing a blockage. at the legislative level now resolved with the overwhelming victory of PASTEF at the polls.
