( Spanish) – The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, appointed this Saturday Jorge Luis Montero Cornejo as the new Minister of Energy and Mines, the country’s presidency reported on its X account.
The appointment came after this week the Peruvian Congress censured the previous minister, Rómulo Mucho Mamani, after considering that he had been negligent in failing to resolve the protests that the miners carried out for more than a week in Lima. The censure of the legislative body forced Mucho Mamani to present his resignation to Boluarte.
Now, Montero Cornejo will have to face the challenges of the sector. The official is an economist by training, was vice minister of Energy and Mines in 2020, has a diploma in human rights and is an expert in businesses and projects with high socio-environmental impacts, the state agency Andina reported this Saturday.
The change in the Ministry occurred a day after, during Friday night, Congress approved extending a license for six months so that artisanal and small-scale miners can continue working without their activity being considered a crime. The license was due to expire on December 31 and has now been extended until June 30, 2025, with the possibility of extending for another six months.
Artisanal and small-scale miners had been protesting outside the Congress headquarters for more than a week demanding this measure.
