The US cancels its strategic partnership agreement with Georgia for suspending its accession process to the EU

MADRID Nov. 30 () –

The US State Department announced this Saturday the cancellation of its strategic agreement with Georgia after the Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Kobajidze, leader of the Georgian Dream party, announced this week the paralysis of the country’s accession process to the European Union .

“Georgian Dream’s decision to suspend EU membership is a betrayal of the Georgian constitution,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

In it, the US condemns “the excessive use of force against Georgians exercising their freedom to protest” during the rallies in recent weeks in the country’s capital, Tbilisi, led by opposition groups that accuse Kobajidze and his party. of having won the last elections by fraudulent methods and with the covert support of Russia.

Kobajidze announced this Thursday that his government had decided to suspend “until the end of 2028” the negotiations for accession to the European Union, a procedure that Brussels has already suppressed ‘de facto’ due to Tbilisi’s antidemocratic drift and its approach to positions similar to Moscow. .

For all these reasons, the spokesperson for the North American State Department has announced that the United States has decided to “suspend the so-called Strategic Partnership Agreement with Georgia”, without giving further details for the moment.
