A fire caused this Thursday the disconnection of the last line connecting the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant with the Ukrainian power systemaccording to a statement from the Ukrainian company Energoatom.
The fire, in the ash pits of the plant, generated the disconnection of the last connection line on two occasions.
Three other lines had previously been damaged by actions that the company described as “terrorist attacks”.
“The invaders’ actions led to a complete disconnection of the ZNPP from the power grid, the first in the plant’s history, the statement said. In Zaporizhia there have been military actions for which the Russians and Ukrainians hold each other responsible.
The situation at the plant has generated great concern over the danger that the confrontation could end up leading to an atomic incident with unpredictable consequences.
This information from Energoatom comes shortly after, from Paris, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, will explain that there is an agreement in principle with Ukraine and Russia for their agency to carry out an inspection at the site “in the next few days”.
“There is an agreement in principle and we are working on the details. The hypothesis of an inspection is imminentGrossi said in an interview with France 24, after a meeting in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Russian army controls the plant, the largest in Europe, since last March, but the Ukrainian operators continue to work on it, in a context of bombing and stress that worries the international community, starting with the IAEA.
Grossi hopes to lead the mission in which several technical specialists will participates to make repairs, restore transmission systems that have been damaged and ensure a continued presence of the agency to help stabilize the plant where, he recalled, “the risks are real.”
