MADRID 27 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –
An armored military vehicle ran over a protester this Wednesday in the capital of Mozambique, Maputo, within the framework of the demonstrations called by the opposition presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane over the results of the last elections.
The Armed Forces of Mozambique have admitted in a statement collected by the Lusa news agency that the young woman has been run over on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue by a vehicle that was deployed within the framework of the protests to unblock the roads and monitor the situation.
The victim, who is in serious condition, has been taken to a hospital after the accident. Moments later, protesters responded to Mozambican security forces by throwing stones and blocking the streets of the capital.
“The Armed Forces deeply regret what happened and assume full responsibility for the medical and psychosocial care of the victim. However, they call on citizens to take into account traffic safety measures and the priority of military vehicles” , has settled.
The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has indicated on the social network X that they are “dismayed” by what happened. Likewise, they have urged the situation of violence in the country to be de-escalated, for the Police to refrain from using unnecessary force and to initiate investigations into the matter.
For its part, the United States Embassy in Mozambique has published a statement in which it urges the authorities to carry out an investigation into this incident, as well as “other information about the disproportionate use of force in order to ensure the surrender of accounts in accordance with the law”.
