( Spanish) – A woman denounced the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, for alleged sexual harassment between 2013 and 2014. The president’s defense flatly denied this Tuesday that such a thing had happened and, instead, presented another story.
In a press conference, the president’s lawyer, Jonatan Valenzuela, pointed out that his client “was the victim of a sending of emails constituting systematic harassment against him, which has now had as a new episode the filing of a complaint in the Magallanes Regional Prosecutor’s Office on September 6, 2024.”
According to Valenzuela, the complainant, whose identity is withheld, met Boric in the context of her professional practice in Punta Arenas, in the southern region of Magallanes. From there, Boric’s lawyer maintains, she sent the current president 25 emails from different email addresses. “In one of them, explicit images were sent to him, unsolicited and not consented to by the [ahora] president,” said Valenzuela.
contacted the Chilean president’s lawyer for more information, but so far there has been no response.
Boric’s defense explained in a statement that “ten years later, the sender of the emails filed a baseless complaint against the already president Gabriel Boric. Since July 2014 there has been no communication between my client and the sender. My client never had an emotional or friendly relationship with her and they have not had any communication since July 2014.”
Valenzuela added that “from the first moment, President Boric has been at the complete disposal of the most absolute clarification of these events,” stating that he has already delivered a copy with all the emails to the Prosecutor’s Office.
From the La Moneda Palace, the Government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, pointed out in a press conference that the data provided by the complainant are “completely false.” “We are facing an unsubstantiated complaint about events that never occurred. The president has not been notified, summoned, or even requested by the Prosecutor’s Office regarding this complaint,” adding that “it is common for people who are publicly exposed to experience types of harassment through social networks, emails or otherwise and not all of them are reported.” .
For his part, the regional prosecutor of Magallanes, Cristián Crisosto Rifo, pointed out that he is also investigating the possible crime of improper dissemination of intimate images. “Boric is accused in this case, which is in a deformalized capacity (it has not yet been brought to Court before the guarantee judge and, therefore, the crimes have not yet been formalized), with various cases pending. From day one, the victim has been offered attention and advice in all activities. At the moment, this case is reserved.”
