BRUSSELS Nov. 26 () –
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, warned this Tuesday the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, that a trade war is of no interest to anyone, not even Washington, after the magnate has declared that he will impose tariffs on “all” imports from Mexico and Canada.
“One thing is clear: if Trump opens a new trade war and starts imposing tariffs on everyone, he will not help the world economy. He will create difficulties for everyone, starting with the Americans themselves,” he warned. the head of European diplomacy in statements from Italy where he is participating in the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting.
In this sense, he has pointed out that Trump’s statements “are not good news” and has pointed out that if tariffs begin to extend, the growth dynamic will stop and will impact the global economy.
The High Representative has advanced that the European Executive will have ways to respond to a possible trade war, ensuring that the EU is “ready” to adopt countermeasures. In any case, he has avoided going into details, after remembering that he is in the last days of his mandate and that next week the new European Commission will come in and will have to define this type of issues in its bilateral relationship with Washington.
Trump promised this Monday to impose a 25 percent tariff on “all” imports from Mexico and Canada, as well as increase by 10 percent the tariffs already applied to products imported from China.
“On January 20, as one of my many first executive orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent tariff on all products entering the United States, and its ridiculous open borders,” he said. announced in a message on his Truth Social platform.
The Republican leader claims to make this decision in response to the “illegal aliens” and “crime and drugs” that, as he has declared, cross the border.
