The decision coincides with incursions by settlers in Hebron during the reading of the Torah on the Tomb of the Patriarch
Nov. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least eleven Israeli settlers have been arrested in the last few hours for attacking Israeli Army forces following the decision taken yesterday by the Government to annul the figure of administrative detention without charges for this population, as reported by Army radio. Israeli on his social network account X.
The Government’s decision comes at a particularly tense time in the West Bank. Tens of thousands of Jewish worshipers are visiting Hebron to commemorate the annual Torah reading about Abraham’s purchase of the site of the Patriarch’s Tomb to bury his wife, the matriarch Sarah.
Palestinian residents have been denouncing for years that settlers are taking advantage of the event to cross the separation line of the divided city and unleash a wave of violence on the populations of the area, with the connivance of the Israeli Army.
In fact, this past Friday, several dozen Jewish extremists attacked the head of the IDF Central Command, Major General Avi Bluth, charged with controlling settler violence in the West Bank. Five of them were arrested for trying to attack the soldier, whom they insulted as a “traitor.”
Administrative detention policies, which from now on will be limited only to the Palestinian population, allow the Ministry of Defense to hold suspects without charge, while administrative restriction orders prevent them from visiting certain areas or communicating with certain people.
The tool is typically used when authorities have intelligence linking a suspect to a crime, but do not have enough evidence for charges to be filed in a court of law.
