National Assembly of Nicaragua generally approves partial reform of the Constitution that consolidates the power of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo in the country

( Spanish) – The National Assembly of Nicaragua generally approved this Friday the partial reform of the Nicaraguan Constitution, which opens the door for the subordination of all public powers to the presidency of the country, in the hands of Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, reported the official portal El 19 Digital.

To enter into force, the project must be approved in the next session, which will begin in January 2025.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turkpointed out this Friday that the proposals for constitutional reforms that were approved by the Nicaraguan Assembly could further threaten the Rule of Rights and aggravate the human rights crisis that the country is going through.

“If adopted, these changes will mark the end of fundamental freedoms and the rule of law in Nicaragua, further eroding the already fragile remaining checks on the executive branch,” Türk said in a statement.
