() – Former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz published this Thursday in X who declines his candidacy as Secretary of Justice.
“Yesterday I had excellent meetings with the senators. I appreciate your thoughtful comments – and the incredible support of so many. “While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition,” Gaetz wrote.
“There is no time to waste in an unnecessarily prolonged melee in Washington, which is why I will withdraw my name from consideration to serve as attorney general. Trump’s Justice Department must be in place and ready on Day 1.”
For his part, the president-elect Donald Trump published his reaction to its candidate’s decision to withdraw from consideration for the Cabinet position.
“I very much appreciate Matt Gaetz’s recent efforts in seeking approval to be attorney general. He was doing very well, but at the same time, he didn’t want to be a distraction to the Administration, for which he has a lot of respect. “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to seeing all the great things he will do!” he posted.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
