MADRID 20 Nov. () –
The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned this Wednesday an attack carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels against the merchant ship ‘Anadolu S’, flying the Panama flag and owned by a Turkish company, which was transiting the Red Sea.
“We condemn the missile attacks carried out by the Houthis against the cargo ship ‘Anadolu S’, flagged in Panama and owned by a Turkish company, while it was sailing off the coast of Yemen,” it said in a statement in which it says that they will take “the necessary measures” to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sari alleged that the ship’s crew “did not respond to warnings” and the company that owned it “violated the ban on entry into the ports of occupied Palestine,” referring to Israel.
The Houthis, who have controlled the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and other areas of the north and west of the country since 2015, have launched several attacks against Israeli territory and against ships with some type of Israeli connection as a result of the offensive against the Strip. of Gaza following the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.
Likewise, Yemeni rebels have attacked US and British ships and drones in response to these countries’ bombing of Yemen. Washington and London say they are acting to defend free navigation in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
