Italy joins the United States and also recognizes Edmundo González Urrutia as elected president of Venezuela

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Melonirecognized this Wednesday Edmundo González Urrutia as “elected president” of Venezuela during a meeting in Buenos Aires with the Argentine president, Javier Milei. The transalpine country thus joins the United States, which this Tuesday also recognized the opponent as president-elect for the first time in public.

“Together with the European Union we work for a democratic and peaceful transition of Venezuela so that the preference expressed by the Venezuelan people for the elected president González Urrutia and the legitimate aspirations for freedom and democracy finally come true,” said Meloni.

The head of government of Italy also stated that does not recognize the “proclaimed victory” by the Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduroafter the elections of July 28, which the opposition described as a “fraud” considering that the winner was González Urrutia.

Meloni spoke these words after a meeting with Milei at the Casa Rosada (seat of the Argentine Executive) on the occasion of his first official visit to this country.

“We continue to condemn the brutal repression of the regime which caused the death of dozens of protesters, the arbitrary detention of thousands of political opponents and the exile of the presidential candidate of the democratic opposition,” Meloni continued.
