At LEVEL UP we were invited by Konami to test Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, a compilation that brings together 13 classic games in one package. In the place we were able to eat lots of pizza and play in the company of Tommy Williams, PR Manager of Konami, who told us about some characteristics of this collection.
In this session we were able to test Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters and the legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. In this first approach we noticed that the games are well optimized and run without errors. They also have an interface that allows you to make adjustments at any time or even rewind the game to correct mistakes instantly, among other extras.
In addition to playing, we also took the opportunity to chat with Tommy about some features of this collection. Konami’s PR Manager talked to us about some of the additions that add great value to the game. For example, The turtle lair, an option that brings together material of all kinds. In this space that reminds us of the home of our green heroes, we will have access to scanned images of boxes; manuals; comic book covers; music and much more.
tommy williams: “We work with the developers of Digital Eclipse to make the best retro collection. What we did was go through the Konami archive and look at the design documents. What we included were all the manuals, boxes; American and Japanese. They asked us if we wanted to add everything and we said yes. We scanned all the original manuals and put them inside. As you can see, it’s a lot of material.
Putting all of this content together took a lot of time and effort on the part of the developers and the Konami team. Tommy told us how this process was.
tommy williams: “It took us years, a few years. Because originally this came about when we were making the collection of Against Y Castlevania, but we wanted to do more this time. It was a couple of years because in addition to the Konami archive, we went to different stores and museums to find a lot of these things, like the commercials. We had to travel to Massachusetts in the United States, to different museums and look for them to have all this. We didn’t know it was that much until we saw it together.”
A curious detail is that in addition to the sketches and the material included with the games, some press kits with material that is difficult to access were also added.
tommy williams: “There are some censored parts because they were not owned by Konami. We want everything to be of interest to both older and younger players, so that after playing they can see all of this. Something interesting is that sketches and design pages that have been translated were included.”
Digital Eclipse and Konami didn’t stop there. For this collection, brief guides were created with some tips that can be consulted at any time.
tommy williams: “We teamed up with Digital Eclipse for strategy guides for each game. If you recognize the format it’s like the old Nintendo Power magazines. Same tone and all, they’re not in the gallery but you can see them in the games menu. All the guides are new and were created for the collection. This may be too much but as a fan I think it’s fantastic.”
As it is a compilation of classic games, there is always the question about its price, but this compilation work adds value to the complete package.
tommy williams: “It includes 13 games in one package, I think the value of this is impressive. And all the extra content by itself in the gallery is worth it. The extra features alone make the game worth the cost. Plus you can play it over and over again without getting bored, plus online play.”
TMNT: Cowabunga Collection It will arrive on August 30 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series S / X and PC through Steam. What do you think of the content included in this package? Leave us your answer in the comments.
