The passage of tropical storm Sara through Honduras, where it dissipated in the early hours of Monday, left two dead, more than 123,000 affected and almost 1,800 communities cut off, after affecting several Central American countries with intense rains and flooding.
The remnants of the storm, the authorities of Honduras and El Salvador warned, will continue to generate rainfall in several areas, with possible river flooding, landslides or falling trees.
One of the two dead is a 3-year-old boy, who drowned in the Jalegua River, in the department of Yoro, in northern Honduras. His body was found five kilometers ahead and was handed over to his mother.
The other deceased is a 47-year-old man, also swept away when trying to cross the Monga River and whose body was found in the Honduran municipality of Sabá, in Colón.

Authorities report the death of at least one person. Coffee plantations in Honduras would also have been affected by the heavy rains.
“Tropical Storm Sara has dissipated over the Yucatan Peninsula. However, the remnants of Sara will continue to generate scattered rains and showers, accompanied by electrical activity, in the southern and southwestern regions,” reported the National Studies Center in Honduras. Atmospheric, Oceanic and Seismic (CENAOS).
No deaths were reported in other countries.
“Pain fills my mother’s heart when I learn of the loss of a little one in this storm, which fills us with deep sadness. Mateo Ramos Cruz, just 3 years old, lost his life in the waters of the Jalegua River,” said the mother. President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro. “This tragedy moves us and affects us to the depths of our soul,” he added.
Communities cut off, houses damaged
The Honduran authorities of the Secretariat of Risk Management and National Contingencies (Copeco) registered 1,794 communities cut off from communication, 3,212 houses damaged, 11,871 people evacuated and 6,004 displaced to shelters.
El Salvador maintained the alert in several sectors on Monday due to intense rains.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources reported that the remnants of tropical depression Sara, along with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which is where the relatively constant winds blowing between the northern and southern hemisphere are located, continued to favor the rains that still affect the country.
According to Civil Protection, in El Salvador 11 homes were flooded and small rivers overflowed, as well as landslides, fallen trees or temporarily obstructed roads. There were no reports of deaths.
President Nayib Bukele announced that they gave $300 to some 1,000 farming families and that they would distribute 50,000 food packages to those affected by the rains.
In Guatemala, 57 emergencies related to floods or landslides were attended to, especially in three departments in the north of the country: Petén, Izabal and Alta Verapaz. The phenomenon affected about 50,000 people, according to authorities.
