The United Nations special rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, has stressed that the UN has published during the last year “three reports investigating Israel’s genocidal practices”, after Pope Francis defended the need to “carefully investigate” whether the offensive against the Gaza Strip fits the definition of genocide.

“I hope that Pope Francis will have time to read the two reports on genocide that I have written this year, the recent report of the UN Committee on Israeli Practices, which also covers charges of genocide, and the report of the special rapporteur on the right to food, denouncing famine or destruction of food sovereignty as a genocidal practice,” he said.

“Three reports investigating Israel’s genocidal practices in one year,” he highlighted on his account on the social network X, after the Pontiff stated that “according to some experts, what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide.” .

Thus, Pope Francis asked to “investigate carefully” to determine “if it fits the technical definition formulated by jurists and international organizations,” according to excerpts collected by the newspaper ‘La Stampa’ from his next book, titled ‘Hope never disappoints.’ Pilgrims towards a better world’.

Israel launched its offensive against Gaza after the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian armed factions, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 250 kidnapped, according to Israeli authorities.

Since then, more than 43,800 Palestinians have died in the enclave, according to Gaza authorities, controlled by Hamas, in addition to more than 780 Palestinians killed at the hands of Israeli security forces and in attacks carried out by settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. .
